Today at work we received some new Cisco VPN hardware.
Along with the hardware we received the usual product disk claiming to contain the latest VPN client.
After chucking it in the drive and loading it up we discovered that in the place of the usual boring software was an audio disk with 12 tracks of Spanish music.

Anyone else had the same thing ? Or know what the track is ?
Is there a hidden message that we can hear? Have you tried to play it backwards?
What a joke.
Quick, call the RIAA!
Would have been funnier if the disc was full of porn, or goatse.

So I give it a week for those tracks to be:
a. on the internet for download
b. some of the most popular songs in America
c. part of the new Cisco Dance Mix Collection

That sample track seems to be from “El Compa” Diego Rivas (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=145614104). A corridos singer from Culiacán, Sinaloa.

That’s funny. I don’t know the band in particular, but the style is norteño. I found some of the lyrics quoted on this page:

Change the file extension to .EXE and see what happens.

Well, very simple, I don’t know exactly which band is it but I can tell you that’s no original CD, it’s a compilation made by some music pirates from Mexico. The genre of the music is known as “corrido norteño” mostly heard by people in the northern states of the country and also in Texas, California and Chicago.
Post a couple more songs and I can tell you exactly the name of the band.

Dave, I would recommend downloading MusicBrainz (free) to discover the artist and title of the song. I’ve had a decent level of success using that program to help me learn what the names of songs are when I have them on my computer but don’t know what the F they are.
The song sample is one of the crappy bootleg remixes that wanna be DJs sell on swap meets. Also, it’s crappy “Narco Corridos” (check out what wikipedia has to say http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcocorrido [wikipedia.org]), a genre that some songwriter friends of mine define as “the cancer that is killing Mexican music”. The first thing is the cliche echo deep voice, frequent in remix CDs, followed by some guy singing about how much he loves drugs.
(I posted this same comment on slashdot. I know a few of the songs, but I don’t have a clue who the artists is. Mexican narco corrido artists nowadays seem to be singing the same songs over and over!)

Check your components really carefully to make sure they’re legit.
So who still trusts the VPN-Clients on CDs which do not contain music but a VPN-Client? Could be a rigged one…
Funny… US Robotics had the same problem with a certain number of modems that came out 6-7 years back.
Those were the days….
So, does that mean someone wanting a Spanish CD is wondering why they have VPN software instead?

Cisco is aware that some customers have received defective VPN Client CDs as part of recent orders.
Manufacturing is aware of this problem and is actively reshipping new media to impacted customers.
Customers who purchased directly from Cisco will receive the replacement media directly while those who purchased from a distributor/VAR should receive the replacement from whomever they placed the order.
Defective VPN Client CDs can be identified by the following marking on the back of the media which ends in “MX21511/4”
